Fast Concept Modeller - FCM is a workbench within CATIA V5 that enables the integration and convergence of design and analysis.
FCM was developed in a joint cooperation with BMW and focuses on the needs of the automotive industry in the early concept phase. FCM delivers a fast and intuitive generation of geometrical representations of a car concept and enables an automatic derivation of functional models to analyze and optimize the structure of a new car concept.
FCM is packaged in 3 main modules:
• P1 - FCM Parametric Modeller
• P2 - FCM Analysis Preprocessor
• P3 - FCM Structure Analysis Processor
and two CATIA add-ons:
• Z1 - FCM Section Master for CATIA V5
• Z2 - FCM Attribute Master for CATIA V5
Description :
FCM Analysis Preprocessor is an integrated CATIA V5 tool enabling a new level of efficiency in concept design and engineering. This extension to the FCM parametric modeler offers functionalities to prepare FE meshes directly from parametric designs created in CATIA.
Intuitive modeling and FE analysis are coupled in a very unique way. By combining the benefits of a clear operating concept and an intuitive body modeller with the advantages of a powerful property management function, vehicles can be created freely, variants can be derived fast and easy and functional approaches can be defined already within CATIA. Geometrical product design and functional product layout are brought together in methods, processes and systems.
FCM Analysis Preprocessor offers the additional possibility to save FE data right into the CAD model. While FCM parametric modeller significantly accelerates parametric-associative geometry creation within CATIA V5, FCM Analysis Preprocessor accelerates the overall engineering loop. CAE Attributes and connections need to be assigned only the first time round. When the parts are changed these attributes are automatically updated and stay together with the models including copies and variants all through the process. Moreover, its interfaces to FE- and meshing-programs, which are launched directly out of FCM/CATIA, allow automatically exported models for crash, NVH and static analyses. The analysis loop is fully automated and repeatable and takes place in the background (batch meshing), leaving the user free for other work.
FCM Analysis Preprocessor is available in combination with FCM parametric modeler.

By archiving CAE data together with the corresponding CAD-model in one CATPart, existing discontinuities in the system landscape can be avoided. Manual re-modelling of geometry becomes obsolete and redundancies are less likely. Less system-interfaces are less prone to errors. Because design and simulation data remain consistent and the same consistent data can be used by the engineers across a common PLM Backbone, FCM Analysis Preprocessor enables a first of its kind highly efficient multi- and intra-disciplinary design-process in CATIA V5. Because of the use of this backbone, all stages, from initial phase to production, can be seamlessly covered and different departments can be linked together.
Because of the bi-directional communication between CAD and CAE the iterative engineering loops (design – validation –optimization) are significantly accelerated. Those automated design loops deliver design maturity at a much earlier stage and ensure a true design-engineering-convergence. Investment risks for the early stage of product design and layout and the time to market are reduced while at the same time the product quality is increased.
